About This Spot

Ukus settles quietly into the steady rhythm of Astoria’s bustling 30th Avenue, a modest spot where the hum of neighborhood life blends with the warm scent of home-cooked Eastern European fare. It’s the kind of place where time seems to slow just a little—the kind of pause that invites you in from the city’s brisk pace and lets you savor the moment through shared meals and familiar flavors.

Despite its unassuming size and straightforward decor, Ukus carries a deeply personal atmosphere that feels like stepping into a family kitchen. The pace never rushes here; it’s patient and welcoming, marked by attentive, one-on-one care that makes every visitor feel recognized. There’s a comforting sincerity in the way the space quietly buzzes with local chatter and the comforting clatter of plates, creating an intimate backdrop to your meal.

The experience of Ukus unfolds through the food—each dish a small story lifted from the rich culinary traditions of the Balkans. You’ll sense the tender patience in a slowly simmered stew, the balance of fresh and robust in a simple salad, or the satisfying crispness of pastries that are as soul-satisfying as they are filling. It’s not just what’s on the plate but the quietly shared ritual of tasting food that feels lovingly prepared as if for family, a sentiment deeply reflected in the friendly exchanges and genuine smiles that welcome you.

Beyond just nourishment, Ukus serves as a gentle reminder of community—a place where people rediscover old flavors or meet new ones for the first time, all within a setting that feels rooted in care and tradition. For those wandering through Astoria’s diverse streets, it’s a chance to catch a glimpse of the Balkans without leaving the city, a small neighborhood anchor for people who appreciate both the familiar and the quietly special moments that true hospitality offers.

This Balkan/Albanian restaurant indeed is a local gem, the food is amazing. When I ate the soup, it feels like my grandma just made the soup for me. The mini sausages is exceptional, do is the popular burek/meat pie.

Great food from a family owned restaurant. Super community oriented and so happy we found them on our walk home. A lowkey Astoria staple as they’ve been here for a while. Will definitely come back!

We went there for lunch on a whim on a weekday. The place is tiny and clean and doesn't look fancy. The food was Balkan style - either Serbian or Croatian - and it was very good. There was only one person working there and she took care of us well.

Very family oriented. It was our first time trying Bosnian food and we loved it. Food was freshly cooked and delicious!

Wonderful Bosnian food. Do not know the name of what we ate but the meat pie is wonderful, the cabbage wrapped beef is outstanding, and the steak on a skewer was delightful. Just remember they are cash only and well worth every penny.

Great customer service and even better food. This is a must if you are in Astoria. It was my first time trying Bosnian food and I know I’ll be back many times. I loved the food, I don’t even know how I ate all of my food when I wasn’t hungry. The meat was flavorful and fresh, the bread was warm and delicious, the drinks were very different to the usual coke and orange juices, but were good. Five stars and I will recommend this place to my friends.
